 Reporting to the Nunatta Dean, the Director of Education Programs is responsible for the planning, direction, program delivery and administration of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program and the Early Childhood Education Program.  The Director will regularly collaborate with other senior staff in the planning of programs and will work closely with colleagues from the University of Regina in administering the Bachelor of Education Program.  As a member of Nunavut Arctic College’s management team the Director of Education Programs will regularly provide input into the strategic decision making process. The incumbent directly supervises 9 full-time staff located in Iqaluit, and Rankin Inlet, NU, including 3 Program Managers, and indirectly oversees 13 faculty members. Staff are located in 11 communities throughout the territory. Graduates of the Nunavut Teacher Education Program receive a Bachelor of Education degree  Early Childhood Education graduates earn a 2 year diploma in Early Childhood Education. For the 2017/2018 academic year the expected student enrolment in Education programs is approximately 125 students.

The Instructor, ECE Program is responsible for developing and delivering courses and providing curriculum expertise in early childhood development. The incumbent will ensure that course content is based on current research in the field of early childhood education. The position works as a member of the ECE team to schedule and deliver courses in the ECE diploma and Applied Certificate Programs. The Applied Certificate program is delivered in communities outside of Cambridge Bay, and the incumbent will be required to travel to those communities for course delivery.

Reporting to the Program Manager, ECE Programs, the incumbent will develop, deliver and evaluate courses in Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun and English languages for ECE program students. The incumbent will provide a strong foundation of Inuit culture and language content. The Instructor will teach early childhood development and practices to students from the Inuit cultural perspective and support Inuit language and culture integration in the program and the Nunavut childcare workplace. The position will also involve working with a variety of local and regional organizations, to ensure the course content meets Inuit cultural and linguistic needs, College policies and standards and the specific needs relevant to the community. The Instructor will also be responsible for coordinating and supervising student practicums.

The Director, Inuit Language and Culture Programs fulfills a critical position at Nunavut Arctic College and its Inuit Language and Culture Centre of Excellence. Reporting to the Nunatta Dean, the incumbent directly oversees the College’s Inuit Studies and Culture program, Fine Arts and Crafts program, Interpreter/Translator Program and the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Oral History and Research division. The Inuit Language and Culture Centre of Excellence is a key strategic direction for the College and the Director will regularly collaborate with the Nunatta Dean, the Director of Piqqusilirivvik, the Director of Education Programs, other senior management staff in the College and the Department of Culture and Heritage. The incumbent directly supervises 12 full-time tenured faculty, two tenured Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Oral History and Research staff and a Secretary. Staff are located in Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Cambridge Bay and Igloolik, NU. There are no vacancies in the Language and Culture division. Student enrollment for Inuit Language and Culture for the 2017/2018 academic year is expected to be approximately 40-50 students.

Elaine Uppahuak-Prusky, a Senior Business Officer with the Government of Nunavut, has taken her career to the next level by completing the Senior Manager’s Hivuliqtikhanut Diploma. She is one of 15 GN employees to do so in 2016.

Accredited by Dalhousie University in Halifax, the one-year program was developed for employees at three levels: emerging managers, supervisors and senior managers.

Attendees learn from a variety of classroom and learning modules, building capacity for those pursuing careers with the Government of Nunavut. Yet, Uppahuak-Prusky points out that graduates not only learn new skills, they gain confidence in their roles.

NAC recognizes that opportunities are good for careers in business, administration and management in Nunavut. To prepare for the roles, several business programs are offered in Office Administration, Management Studies and the Municipal Government Program. A Pre-Trades program will run from Feb 13 to May 26, at Sanatuliqsarvik, Nunavut Trades Training Centre in Rankin Inlet. The program focuses on the foundations of math, science and English.

As the economy grows, NAC offers trades training programs that will lead to good jobs in Nunavut. To qualify for these jobs, graduates must be well trained in their program specialty, as well as be prepared to serve an apprenticeship.

The Nunavut Trades Training Centre in Rankin Inlet played centre stage for a hands-on visit by the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and his wife, Sharon Johnston, on May 13. They were joined by the Honourable Nellie T. Kusugak, Commissioner of Nunavut.

Students from the Trades Training Centre completed their first attempt to pass their second year Apprenticeship program which covered the Electrical, Housing Maintainer and Carpentry trades. The results for the second year were outstanding. 100% success rate from the first attempt.  We take this opportunity to thank the staff and faculty on a job well done.
