National Nurses Week May 11-17

The theme for Nurses Week 2015 is Nurses: With you every step of the way. It is a theme which resonates with Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) and the Department of Health.

The Nursing Program is meeting the Government of Nunavut’s goal of increasing nursing staff retention as well as increasing the number of Inuit in the nursing field. Since the inception of the Bachelor of Science of Nursing program in 2000 by the Department of Health, in partnership with Dalhousie University, there have been 39 graduates, of which 14 are Inuit.

It is a proud record with several of these graduates nursing in Nunavut’s smaller communities. Nunavut Graduates are with Nunavummiut every step of the way; in Qikiqtani General Hospital, at Public Health, at Home Care, in corrections nursing and health centers across the north.

Nunavut Arctic College has recently introduced a Pre-Nursing year which enhances the academic capability of Inuit in Nunavut for the university nursing program. The enthusiasm is keen in Nunavut for the Pre-Nursing program and it brands Nunavut Arctic College with a similar theme of Inuit students: With you every step of the way.

Please come and celebrate National Nurses Week with the nursing students May 8th at NorthMart, all day, where the students will host a blood pressure clinic, distribute pamphlets and answer health questions you might have.
