Uqaqatigiiluk! Talk About It! ASIST Training Workshops in Nunavut

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is for anyone interested in learning how to help someone who is having thoughts of suicide.

Many people think ASIST is only for those working in the field of mental health. This is not the case. For someone thinking of suicide, you never know who they will talk to. No prior experience or knowledge is necessary to take this workshop. All you need is to feel emotionally ready to talk about suicide and suicide intervention. The minimum age is 16.

ASIST is not a healing workshop. Although participants are expected to share some experiences and attitudes related to suicide, the focus is on learning the best practices in suicide intervention. The version 10.6 of ASIST, developed by Living Works Education, was modified in 2009 to better fit the Nunavut context. “Uqaqatigiiluk!” or “Talk About It!” is taught by Nunavummiut trainers. The workshop can be delivered in Inuktitut, when a qualified simultaneous interpreter is available.

We urge you to register for this 2-day training that will leave you feeling more ready, willing, and able to help save a life. You will learn what works and what doesn’t work. You will watch audio-visual material and simulation exercises that will help you think critically about suicide intervention, and you will get lots of practice time in a safe, smaller group setting.

If you have taken ASIST in the past, but feel you need a refresher, you are welcome to take it again.

This year, Nunavut Arctic College is receiving more community support to help with the workshop deliveries. By March 2016, NAC plans to deliver 12 ASIST in communities that have submitted an application and to specific groups of participants that have requested the training (see 2015-16 schedule).
