2016/17 Pre-Apprenticeship Housing Maintainer

About the Program

The Pre-Apprenticeship Housing Maintainer program is a multi-disciplinary program that aims to give students the knowledge, skills and confidence required to enter into an Apprenticeship program as a Housing Maintainer or to pursue other Nunavut Arctic College Programs.

Students will train with a variety of tools, techniques, and materials in well-equipped shops. Trades-related Math, Science and Communications form a significant part of the curriculum. The program’s academic and technical training ensures students are able to apply theoretical knowledge to practical application.

Pre-Apprenticeship programs integrate Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimaningit and recognize the value of collaborative learning environments unique to Nunavut.

Graduates will be offered the opportunity to challenge the Housing Maintainer Apprenticeship Level 1 exam.

Admission Requirements

Applicants wishing to apply to this program must have the following:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency with a minimum of English 20-2, Math 20-3, and Science 10. Courses including English 30-2, Math 30-3, and Physics 30, Chemistry 30, or Science 30 and Related Career and Technology Studies are highly recommended.

Or, as a mature student:

  • must be 19 years of age or older and have been out of school for at least one academic year
  • must successfully pass the Nunavut Arctic College Trades Placement Exam with a minimum of 70%

Credit Transfer Opportunities

On completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship Housing Maintainer program, students may be eligible to transfer up to 240 hours towards an approved Apprenticeship program through the Department of Family Services.

Employment Opportunities

Completion of this program will position graduates to continue with the Apprenticeship program’s academic and technical training. This will lead to employment opportunities with Community & Government Services (CGS), Nunavut Housing Corporation, and Local Housing Authorities. Additionally, the private sector and mining industry are very active employers, providing Maintenance Services to the above agencies and to homeowners in Nunavut.
