About the Program
The Apprenticeship Cook, Level 1 program is a 40-day, multi-disciplinary program that aims to give students the skills, knowledge, and confidence required to proceed with an Apprenticeship in the Cook Trade.
To become certified journeypersons, apprentices must learn theory and skills, and they must pass examinations. Requirements for certification—including the content and delivery of technical training—are developed and updated by the Nunavut and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Board on the recommendation of the Cook Provincial Apprenticeship Committee.

Admission Requirements
Applicants wishing to apply to this program must have the following:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency with a minimum of English 10-2, Math 10-3 and Science 10. Courses Courses including English 30-2, Math 30-3, Physics 20 or Chemistry 20 or Science 20 and Related Career and Technology Studies are highly recommended.
Or, as a mature student:
- must be 19 years of age or older and have been out of school for at least one academic year
- must successfully pass the Nunavut Arctic College Trades Placement Exam with a minimum of 70%
Full participation requires individuals to be physically capable of performing the work.

Employment Opportunities
Graduates will have a wide range of employment opportunities available to them in both the public and private sectors. The hospitality, mining and the food service industries throughout Nunavut provide significant opportunities for cooks. Cooks may also find employment in restaurants, hospitals, mining/construction camps, schools, and numerous other places where food is produced. Experienced Cook Journeyperson may also work as supervisors or own their own businesses.
The Department of Education works closely with private businesses and Government sectors that are employers of apprentices who seek training.
