Government of Nunavut welcomes NTI resolution on devolution

IQALUIT (November 30, 2011) – Last week at their Annual General Meeting, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) delegates unanimously passed a resolution urging an agreement on devolution of control over Crown land and resources from the federal government to the GN without further delay.

The Government of Nunavut (GN) applauds the support of NTI and joins in urging the federal government to carry through on the commitment it made in the Devolution Protocol of September 2008 to begin devolution negotiations.

“Reaching a devolution agreement has been a shared priority for both NTI and the GN since 2001,” said Premier Eva Aariak. “A devolution agreement is a critical next step in the development of our territory. It is also key for the Government of Nunavut to share in the economic benefits that derive from our natural resources and for Nunavummiut to regain self-reliance.”

Premier Aariak recognizes the urgency of starting negotiations as soon as possible. “I would like to thank NTI for their partnership and for recognizing that we must begin laying the foundation for the future today,” said Premier Aariak.
