Nunavut Arctic College, in partnership with the Government of Nunavut Department of Justice is developing a two-year Paralegal Training Program to be offeredin Iqaluit. The proposed new program is tentatively scheduled to begin in September 2011.

The College’s new paralegal training program aims to prepare Nunavummiut to work as legal assistants and legal researchers. Paralegals work in legal settings serving the public, often under the supervision of lawyers.

The Paralegal Diploma Program will be offered with instructors from various educational and cultural backgrounds and will run for three semesters each year between the months of September and June.

In the program students will develop writing and research skills, study legal terminology, Inuktitut, and traditional Inuit knowledge. They will also studie various areas of law, including criminal, real estate, corporate/commercial, family and traditional inuit law.

Paralegals have many opportunities for employment. In Nunavut there are many jobs that would require trained paralegals who have received the education to be of assistance in the workplace. Nunavummiut from all communities are encouraged to apply as they will be able to bring their skills back to their communities after graduation.
