Nunavut Arctic College students at Kitikmeot Campus celebrated graduation day in Cambridge Bay May 7.

In a special ceremony hosted by the Hamlet of Cambridge Bay at the Luke Novoligak Community Hall, the May 7 ceremony welcomed students and staff, family and friends to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating students.

This year’s ceremony recognized the achievements of Kitikmeot Campus students from Cambridge Bay, Kugluktuk, Kugaaruk, Rankin Inlet, Cape Dorset and Igloolik.

The community celebration began with the traditional lighting of the Qulliq by Cambridge Bay Elder Eva Kakolak. An opening prayer also was offered by Eva.

The keynote address at this year’s ceremony was delivered by the Hon. Jeannie Ugyuk, Minister of Family Services. She reflected on her own experiences going through College. “A former Social Worker, Instructor Catherine McGowan, advised me during a course on policy to write to my MLA when we reviewed policies I disagreed with," she said. "Now here I am, in a position to change policy.”

Diplomas and certificates were presented by Arctic College President Michael Shouldice, Kitikmeot Dean Fiona Buchan-Corey and faculty.

“I enjoy celebrating the many successes of the students, whether it is mastering new skills for employment or the relationships they have made will fellow students and staff," said Buchan-Corey.  "Both are invaluable.”

This year’s graduation also featured a class speech from graduating Social Services Worker students Bobby Kadlutsiak and Rita Aupilardjuk. They thanked the campus and community for their support.

“Thank you to the Community of Cambridge Bay, you have made us very welcome. Thank you also to the staff of the Kitikmeot Campus for their help in getting through the program.”

On behalf of all Board of Governors, students and staff of Nunavut Arctic College, we extend our sincerest congratulations to all our graduates! We wish them all the very best of success!
